Media, Self, Society Scholar
Public Health Science Major
Ikenna Kalu([email protected])
When I was in my senior year of high school, my teacher told me that I excelled
with what I was comfortable with, but I needed to branch out my bubble. After
receiving my acceptation letter to UMD and their scholars program, I was motivated
to make the most of my college experience and explore topics I have never given
a second thought to before. Seeing this scholars program made me realize
I was very unaware of details that consisted of a major part of my life, news and social media. This prompted me to declare my major as Public Health Science because I am passionate about the health field, but instead of joining a scholars program like Life Sciences like I usually have before, I decided to join Media, Self, and Society. At UMD, I plan to grow leaps and bounds not only in progress towards my career but also in knowledge about who I am and what I enjoy. The only way I feel I can achieve that is by being put into various situations and environments that will expose things I didn't know about myself and the first step towards that growth was entering UMD and joining the Media Scholars' program.
